Under the seaaa
2011-03-28 12:18 pmMoar Kumagusu because I'm a nerd like that.
2008.12.19 : Deep sea rover with JAMSTEC
(Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology)
One of my favorite episodes! Footages of deep-sea creatures taken by (then) their latest deep sea rover Shinkai 6500 (shinkai = deep sea). The '6500' means that this rover can actually go down to 6500m under the sea! Which is a LONG way down.
I'm gonna sidetrack a bit -- a company that made these kinds of rovers came to my school a couple of years back, when I was taking Ocean Engineering class. A rep actually brought an actual rover for us to see, so HOLY I thought it was awesome :D We couldn't go inside the rover though but still, only the sight of the machine made the whole class giddy. Hence my enthusiasm in making this post!
In any case, before I continue on the capspam of this episode, I must tell you that I don't have knowledge about deep-sea creatures and their names; but I'll still try to make this post a bit educational 8Dand if you think i make no sense, then just assume it's because i didn't have breakfast yet. So excuse my attempt at finding the names of the creatures that they're gonna show below. And also excuse the fact that most of the info is from Wikipedia. Ahaha.

Narrownose chimaera (I found 'longnose' chimaera too though) a sort of shark that didn't evolve much since ~3000 years ago. Since light couldn't reach the depths here, it depends on its long nose to look for food :3
And then Go went "KIIIIIIIIIIIIIII -- !!" asdfghjkl; I squeeeeeeeeeeeeed

Sawshark :D

Spider fish? Not sure of the common name though.
But see the long, thin things that the fish is standing on? I think that's amusing 8D
Nagano : IT'S STANDING -- !!

Dumbo octopus; called such because of its big flappy ears, resembling Dumbo's :3
Everyone went "KAWAII -- !!" when this came up XD
Nagano : Looks like something that would be in the world of Miyazaki Hayao :D
-- oh Nagano. I love you so much.

Flapjack octopus -- it looks like either an umbrella or a parachute; but it's cute X3

Bigfin squid.
Takeuchi-san amusedly said, "Super long!" to its legs XD

This is actually classified as an animal, not a flower :3
Dunno its name in english though...

The 'walking fish' of the deep sea 8D See its 'legs' there?
Nagano : IT'S WALKING -- !!
-- Nagano can you be any more obviously cuter?

A luminescent fish of the deep sea :D
Everyone was awed when the fish 'light up'!

Rainbow jellyfish -- jellyfish that lights up in rainbow colors! 8D
They're like these lights people put up for decoration XD

Kinda like the rainbow jellyfish, but red in color :3

Another luminescent jellyfish!
The JAMSTEC guy said these creatures are 'lighting up' as a means of communications.

THIS FREAKED ME OUT X'D it's like an alien lifeform...in OUR oceans, people.
Ahaha but as I Wiki'd, they're called siphonophorae, and, well, they're actually not one single organism;
they're more like a lot of organisms living as one.

YAY EXPERIMENT TIME! Everyone loves science demo, yes?

The experiment was about : What is the condition under such and such depth under the sea?
The JAMSTEC guy here used a pressure-thing (dunno what it's called...) to show us the answer.
Here, he demo'd with normal paper cups.

Excuse me while I flail over how Ken looks so innocently amazed & amused at this experiment XDDD

KEN'S FACE GAHHH

His innocence deserves another gif, shaddap.

LOOK HOW SMALL THE CUPS BECOME!

It's changed this much!! :DDD
The reason why is that, the deeper you go under the sea, the higher the pressure becomes; hence, the pressure will 'crush'/force out the many air bubbles in the paper cup.

^ I never thought Inocchi was that...slim.

Next they tested the pressure-thing with these : rubber ball, tennis ball, apple, banana.
JAMSTEC guy : So which of these won't observe any changes?

Leader : Won't it be the apple? Because it's mainly fluid inside.
To which the studio 'oooh'-ed at, and then of course --

Ken : OH THE BALL'S DEFORMED!

So this is what happened at the end of the experiment : the two balls deformed, and the fruits sunk to the bottom.
Well actually the banana didn't even float during the experiment; which means the banana is the one which didn't change. Because bananas don't have much air inside them, therefore they won't float.
Apples have more air in them, so actually the apple here floated for a while at the start of the experiment; then it sunk down when the air inside it was forced out due to pressure.
The balls got deformed because of the same reason : high pressure forcing the air out of them.
And here they asked anyone to sample a taste of the apple that's gone through hundreds of meters deep into the sea...and of course the one who stepped up to the plate was Nagano :D

Nagano : The way the taste enters the nose is different!
SASUGA GURUME-SAN.

Nagano : It goes like 'mowaaa' into your nose!
And a bonus at the end of the episode :

Go : Let's crush this guy. [ using that pressure-thing ]
AHAHAHA WHAT.
So yay another episode done!

"AHAHAHAHAAA!! -- arigatou gozaimasu!"
Earnest laugh SO CUTE.
A Reason to Smile today :
Ice maker is working again today yay!

The Shinkai 6500!
Go : *randomly laughed*
Inocchi : This was on the news -- what's so funny, Go?
-- I thought maybe he's laughing at the 'smiley' there lols.

A type of sea slug -- it was doing a sort of a 'jumping' motion on the seafloor lols CUTE XD
Nagano : Looks like it's doing the long jump 8D
Inocchi : This dude pisses me off X'D

Ken : Only he can tell us stuff like that.
Nagano : Don't tell us you have this in your home!
Leader : The heck, why would I?! *then turning to the staff, while laughing* Shadaaap~!

Date: 2011-09-25 05:35 pm (UTC)I've been trying to laugh silently coz it's in the middle of the night here but what's V6 without the standard leader bullying, Nagano's eternal connection with everything obvious and everything edible, GoKen's dumb comments with Inocchi's totally random comments, and the usual Okada silence LOL. I need more Kumagusu.. If only I can understand like at least half of what they're talking abt T_T
